Travel Study

In July 2006 and 2007, Steve Sonnenberg '74, '75, '81 led alumni and friends on a spectacular 180-mile 7-day trip through the Grand Canyon.

Participants were exposed to some of the most magnificent scenery and geology on Earth, and experienced some of the same emotions that John Wesley Powell did on the first trip through the Canyon 136 years ago!  The trip was immersed in the geology, ecology and history of this spectacular natural wilderness.   Restful floating on the river was punctuated with roller-coaster rides through rapids, hikes up scenic side canyons and an occasional swim to cool off.   Participants camped on beaches each night, and Hatch River Expeditions' crew cooked meals and kept everyone safe.

Monday July 21 through Monday July 28, 2008

Plan on attending a 7.5-day raft trip down the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River.  The trip will depart from Lee's Ferry on Monday morning, July 21 and will end, 185 miles later, on Monday, July 28, at Whitmore Wash.   We will take out by helicopter and then fixed-wing plane back to Lee's Ferry or Las Vegas.  Hatch River Expeditions will supply motorized boats and expert boatmen.   The cost for the trip, including seven nights on the river, food, guidebook and dialogue will be $2600 per person.  You will be responsible for getting to Lee's Ferry for the start of the trip, and back home from Lee's Ferry or Las Vegas afterward.

You will be exposed to some of the most magnificent scenery and geology on Earth, and experience some of the same emotions that John Wesley Powell did on the first trip through the Canyon 138 years ago!  On our trip, we will be totally immersed in the geology, ecology and history of this spectacular natural wilderness.  Restful floating on the river will be punctuated with roller-coaster rides through rapids, hikes up scenic side canyons and an occasional swim to cool off.  We will camp on beaches each night; Hatch's crew cooks our meals and looks to our safety.

Sign up will be first come, first served.   We have space for 27 people.  Upon receiving a non-refundable deposit of $300, we will send you all details on how to get there, what to bring, and everything else you will need to know to enjoy this spectacular adventure.  Reservations must be received by December 15, 2007.

Please call Steve Sonnenberg (303-895-7663) if you have any questions (e-mail: ssonnenb@mines.edu).
