for Students A philanthropist with an intriguing attitude towards engineering and art is helping to initiate a project to benefit students at the Colorado School of Mines. Dr. Erhardt C. Koerper, professional engineer (retired) and artist in many media, donated funds to start a student art loan collection at Mines, making the local college the second school to benefit from his
foresight and generosity. A loan collection started by Dr. Koerper and composed of 200 original artworks in now operating at the Michigan Technological University. The purpose of these student art loans is to make good original works available to students, in order to stimulate their sensitivity to visual design. Dr. Koerper believes that such sensitivity can give joy, and help give balance to their lives. He feels that engineers can be especially responsive to successful visual aesthetic effects, and that concern for good design can be reflected in their own work. At Michigan Tech, under the supervision of a special committee, art is loaned to students for a token fee. A CSM committee, chaired by Eleanor Schlechten and including Kay Martin, Betty Bloom, Carol Dickinson, Mary Hagar, and Gloria Exner, student wife, is working out plans for the project at Mines. Since the Koerper contribution will cover the purchase of only a small starting collection, the committee is seeking donations of original art and/or money for the purchase of such art. Donations are sought in the following media: painting, drawing, graphics in limited editions, photographs, fiber art including rame. Plans for the future include a showing of donated work at the beginning of each semester, at which time CSM students will be given every opportunity to livefor a whilewith the "original" of their choice.
