Blue Key
National Honor Society Since its
inception on the CSM campus in 1925, the Blue Key National Honor Society has been
combining service to the community with good times. Each year, Blue Key invites students who have been at Mines for at least three semesters and who are in the top one-third of their class to join its ranks. The organization, with an average of 50 members annually, is a diverse mix of students from all academic and cultural backgrounds. First created to promote Mines spirit, Blue Key through the years has assumed responsibility for a wide array of campus and community-oriented programs. It is perhaps best known for its annual whitewashing and maintenance of the celebrated mountainside "M"-Blem. In addition, the group provides assistance to CSM's Career Day, tutors nearby primary and secondary school children, trick-or-treats for food drive donations and ushers at commencement ceremonies ¾ to name just a few of the many activities they support. Promoting school spirit still ranks high among Blue Key priorities. It's not unusual to find ebullient members banging on pots and pans to drum up support before CSM sporting events. Blue Key also brings Blaster, the Mines mascot burro, to football games and runs him through the stadium with the Orediggers score. CSM bestowed the Mines Medal on Blue Key on December 17, 1999, to an outstanding student organization that has been making a positive difference on and off the campus for 75 years. |
