Williams Communications Group, Inc., formerly the telecommunications subsidiary of Williams, was formed in January 1997 by the combination of Williams Telecommunications Systems, Inc. (WilTel) and the WilTech Group.

The Tulsa, OK-based company reported sales of $1.7 billion and 8,563 employees in 1998, and began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on October 1, 1999.

Williams Communications sells, maintains and integrates communication products and services and provides the network applications that are needed to drive optimal use of that equipment. The company currently has a 20,000-mile fiber optic network which will expand to 38,000 by the end of 2000.

The following business units comprise Williams Communications:
  • Williams Communications Solutions, a nationwide provider of equipment and multimedia integration services for data, voice and video, was formed in 1997.

  • Williams Network, a nationwide fiber-optic network offering multi-media solutions.

  • Williams Vyvx Services, an international satellite and fiber-optic transmission services provider.

  • ChoiceSeat™, an innovative, interactive in-stadium sports entertainment network.

  • Williams Telemetry, a full-service telemetry company selling information-gathering equipment, wireless networks, and information-processing services to energy suppliers and industrial users.

Over 25 CSM alumni work for Williams Communications including Howard Janzen ’76, and Greg Floerke ’86.

As a result of the School’s close relationship with Williams and the company’s desire to recruit high-quality engineers, Williams hosted the first-ever Williams Day at CSM on October 15.

The company conducted an information session on themselves and assisted students with mock interviews.
