| Dr. Penny lwamasa is the
principal process engineer for The Timken Company, an international manufacturer of highly
engineered bearings and alloy steels. She is responsible for monitoring new technologies,
identifying mid-term operating unit technical requirements, and implementing projects to
reduce cost and increase productivity in the alloy steel business. Before joining The Timken Company, Dr. lwamasa was a research engineer at Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP) Company, an international natural resource conglomerate. At BHP Research, Newcastle Laboratories, in Australia, she developed computational models to describe metallurgical processes. Dr. lwamasa was awarded a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, where her research focused on the physical chemistry of iron and steelmaking. The results from her thesis are on both theoretical value and practical use in the metals processing industry. Dr. lwamasa was named the outstanding graduate in the Colorado School of Mines Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. At CSM she was active in many campus organizations, serving as vice president of the senior class and president of Panhellenic Council. Currently, Dr. lwamasa is a reviewer for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B and is active in a host of professional organizations.
