Jessica Evans was awarded this years Sister-to-Sister
Scholarship at a ceremony in the Studen Center on May 7, 2003. She is the third recipient
of the scholarship, which is focused on helping female students complete their Mines
education. Scholarship recipients are also matched with alumna mentors to help prepare
them for a future in science. The idea for the Sister-to-Sister program was born in
October 1998 at a celebration honoring the 100th anniversary of Florence Caldwells
graduation-Caldwell became the first woman to graduate from CSM when she received a degree
in civil engineering in 1898. Resident and non-resident students are eligible for the
scholarship after their freshman year. The scholarship is awarded annually, but recipients
may apply for the funds in subsequent years.
