$1 Million Gift from Jerome and Rebecca Broussard Family
funds New Master’s Degree Program at Mines

Jerome Broussard With a gift in excess of $1 million, the Jerome and Rebecca Broussard Family of Whitefish, Montana, is paving the way for a new master’s degree program in Engineering and Technology Management at Colorado School of Mines.

Jerome received his metallurgical engineering degree from Mines in 1963.

The new graduate degree, approved Jan. 9, 2001 by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, is designed to provide students with a thorough knowledge of both engineering and technology management.

The engineering management element will focus on planning, organizing, allocating resources, and directing and controlling activities that have an engineering component.

The technology management element will broaden awareness and appreciation of alternative strategies for managing global technology development, acquisition and commercialization.

The first $100,000 of the Broussards’ gift will be used to develop, market and provide technical support for the program.

An additional $900,000 will be set aside in an endowment to help fund the program in perpetuity.

$50,000 a year for three years has been pledged to support scholarships for students interested in pursuing the new degree.

“We are deeply honored that the Broussard family has chosen this gift as a means to exhibit their commitment to the quality of education provided here. Mines constantly strives to tailor its programs to be meaningful for the student and relevant to the marketplace. Business today has a growing need for engineers who possess not only the technical expertise but also the required management skills to function effectively in a highly competitive international business arena.”

John U. Trefny
CSM President

“This gift represents the Broussards’ leadership and vision. Like many of us who graduated from Mines, Jerome has seen how integral business acumen is to the professional success of engineers and scientists. The family’s financial support will ensure that future Mines students will be better prepared to compete in the marketplace. In addition, through this tremendous gift, the Broussard family has set the stage for a fundraising effort that will transform the School’s resources and enhance its reputation as a world-class institution.”
